A poet once said:

“The people of Hadith are the people of the Prophet ﷺ,
Though they did not accompany him, his expiration accompanies them.”

Through the endeavours of the muhaddithun, the Muslim Umma relishes in pure delight and felicity by having one of the greatest favours of Allah; that is to know the blessed words, actions, approvals, characteristics, and beauty of our Master Muhammad ﷺ. Traversing distant lands and making worldly sacrifices did not deter nor discourage the muhaddithun as they sought to bask in the shade of the Prophet ﷺ. A testimony to the great endeavours of these men of Allah is found within the Muslim libraries hosting thousands of works collecting every aspect of the Prophet ﷺ and those around him.

Among this class of great ulama was undoubtedly the Indian sage, Imam Ahmad Rida Khan al-Baraylawi. Despite being a faqih par excellence, his grasp over the science of Hadith was such that the erudite muhaddithun and huffaz of the past century sought his tutelage—one example to suffice was Hafiz Abd al-Hayy al-Kattani.

THE ASANID OF IMAM AHMAD RIDA KHAN

Though the late Imam had excelled in the field of Hadith, work on his ijazat (licences) and asanid (chains of transmission) has been scarce or largely absent. To date, no thabat (a dedicated work to a particular scholar’s ijazat) has been collected. It is for this reason that Dar al-Imam Yusuf al-Nabhani over the last year has been working tirelessly on producing the first-ever thabat for the Imam. This work, reaching more than 200 pages, has been compiled by a specialist in the field of asanid and ijazat, and features never before released appendices.
